Kirk Brown - Board Member, Marketing and Public Relations Director
I was born in Philadelphia, PA but moved to Burlington, VT when I was less than a year old. I spent my whole childhood in VT enjoying all the activities the Green Mountain State has to offer such as hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, camping, hiking, etc... I was also fortunate to grow up in a home filled with music as my mother is a cello teacher who appreciated all forms and styles of music. I can remember listening to her stereo at a young age, going through her record collection looking for something that had words in the music (there was a lot of classical). Luckily she had a diverse musical taste and also had records by the Beatles, Yes, The Who, Jethro Tull and Blood, Sweat and Tears. As my musical interests grew I found myself gravitating toward more modern rock at the time such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Kiss, Black Sabbath and Van Halen. I attempted to learn guitar at the age of 10 but found it quite a bit more challenging than I expected. After a brief break from the guitar at the age of 12 I decided I wanted to play the drums, much to my parents dismay! I went out, found my own teacher and asked my parents if they would pay for lessons. Within a year I had my own kit, a Ludwig Vistalite set in clear blue. A set which I am proud to say I still own (and play) to this day. In 1986 I decided to venture out in the world and elected to attend college at the University of Southern Californina, home of the Trojans. There I studied business and earned a BS degree in Marketing in 1990, all the while playing the drums in my spare time.
Fast forward to 2008. While both working for HFC and was introduced to Viva Musica by the director and founder Erin Belanger. She knew I was an avid music lover and also involved with philanthropy with our current employer. She asked me If I would be interested in helping organize a benefit concert to support music and art in MN schools. I welcomed the opportunity to join her cause and support something that I have been invloved with and passionate about for most of my life. I participated in the first event and we raised about $1000 for a school that Erin had ties to. Viva Musica helped them get their percussion equipment repaired and brought up to playable standards. Since then I have been involved with every Viva Musica event, helping our organization with everything from choosing locations and selecting artists to handling public relations, overseeing fund raising and coordinating marketing activites. In 2011 I was asked to join the board of the directors as the PR/Marketing Director and gladly accepted that role which the capacity that I currently serve for the organization. One of my fondest memories was presenting a new Yamaha electronic keyboard to Pine Hill Elementary school. This is a school that both my children attended and participated in musical activities during their time there. While both of my children have since gone on to middle school I know the keyboard was used in each of their Christmas and Spring presentations and still continues to enhance the students of that school to this day.
Do I sing in the shower? No, but I often do in my car listening my favorite performers with the volume turned up real loud.....and I sound great!
